OMNISOUL (2002-2008) (Reunited for one show in 2024)

Omnisoul formed in Newark, Delaware in 2002 by a group of University of Delaware students: Derek Fuhrmann on vocals and guitar, Jamie Orlando on keyboards, Josh Berger on bass, Tyler Ingersoll on drums, and Wayne Silver on guitar. The original lineup gigged throughout Delaware and the surrounding region before Wayne’s exit in 2003. Continuing as a four piece, the band released the EP Climbing Ladders in 2003 and the full length Happy Outside in 2004. Guitarist Shawn Manigly joined during this period, rounding out the lineup as the band expanded its sound and touring footprint. The band played anywhere that would have them, from now defunct Delaware staples like The Ground Floor, the Stone Balloon, East End Cafe, and Kahunaville to shows up and down the East Coast. “Waiting (Save Your Life)” earned regular rotation on 93.7 WSTW, helping extend their reach beyond the local circuit.

A bit of luck put the band on Rolling Stone’s radar when Rainbow Records, a local shop adjacent to the University of Delaware campus, was selected to share its best selling albums and Happy Outside was included in the mix. That exposure led to industry showcases in New York and eventually a deal with Wind-up Records. The band entered Avatar Studios in NYC in 2005 and 2006 to record Consequence with producer Gregg Wattenberg. Before the album was released, two of those recordings found an audience elsewhere: the re recorded “Waiting (Save Your Life)” appeared on the Fantastic Four soundtrack, and “Not Giving Up” was featured in Madden 07, along with additional television and sports placements. During that era, the band also spent time working in Los Angeles, including recording with Don Gilmore and filming the video for “Not Giving Up.” As the label focused on building radio momentum, the album’s release was delayed before eventually arriving in stores in 2007 under the name The Crash Motive. Not long after its release, the band was dropped from the label.

Following the label run and name change, Tyler Ingersoll exited the band. The final EP, Just Cause It Never Happened Don’t Mean It Won’t, was recorded in 2008 with Ritchie Rubini producing and Nick DiDia engineering. Josh Dannin then joined on drums, bringing renewed energy as the band wrote, recorded, and played through its final chapter.

In 2024, members reunited at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia for the 20 year anniversary of Happy Outside, joined by longtime friends and collaborators. In July 2025, Derek Fuhrmann passed away after a battle with cancer, a loss that was deeply felt by his family, friends, and the broader music community. Omnisoul’s run belonged to the MySpace era, when regional bands built momentum through constant gigging, early social media, and whatever outlets were available at the time.
