THE VOLTAGS (1979-1980)

Dave Bennett and Craig “Hangnail” Phillips grew up together in Brookside Park Newark DE. Hangnail started The Exotics in 1964. In 1968, Hangnail and Dave started the band Pump Productions releasing the single Pappy’s Rug/ Kinda like in 1970. After graduating High school, Hangnail went on to start Rudy Baker and the Vegetables and Dave founded the band Snakegrinder. Fast forward to the end of the decade, Dave Bennett had just written two new songs- Son of Sam and Electric Jungle. He recruited Hangnail and Hangnail suggested his old friend James Keesey from earlier Newark band The Illusion of Soul for drums. One day old friend and Snakegrinder manager Nick Norris was looking at a photo of Dave standing in front of a “Danger High Voltage” sign, and Dave’s head was cutting off the “E’ in Voltage and thus the name Voltags was born.
